People plant natives and Mediterranean gardens for good reasons. Less water, habitat for things that live here, a garden that belongs to this place rather than to Connecticut. Then two years on it looks terrible, or half of it is gone, and the conclusion everyone draws is that natives are difficult, or that they only ever look good in photographs.
Usually the plants were fine. The maintenance killed them.
Most crews are not careless. They are doing what they were taught, on a schedule that rewards speed and tidiness, with equipment built for both. But the habits the industry standardised on were built for lawns and clipped hedges. Applied to a native or Mediterranean planting they do real damage, slowly enough that nobody connects the decline to the practice that caused it. The plant gets the blame, and gets replaced with another one that will die the same way.
You do not need to know horticulture to spot it. Walk your property and look at six things.
Score each one honestly. You are looking at what is actually happening on the ground, not at what the contract says.

Look at the shrubs, up close
Cause for concern
Shrubs cut into balls, boxes or flat-topped shapes, with a dense outer shell of twigs and dieback inside. Cut ends are ragged or torn rather than clean.
What good looks like
The plant keeps its own shape. You can see into it. Whole branches have been taken out at the base, never more than about a quarter of the plant at a time, leaving an open structure air moves through.
Why it matters. Shearing with gas hedgers creates that outer shell, and blunt blades tear rather than cut. A stressed, poorly healed plant is an open door to disease and insects. It also has to be redone constantly, so you are paying for the damage twice.

Look at the soil under the shrubs
Cause for concern
Bare, compacted, pale soil, blown clean of every fallen leaf. Often visibly dry a few inches down even after irrigation.
What good looks like
A layer of leaf litter, mulch or natural groundcover left in place, breaking down into the soil beneath.
Why it matters. Blowing out leaf litter and hauling it to the dump removes the mulch the plants make for themselves. Bare soil loses water to evaporation, bakes in the sun and kills the beneficial insects and soil life plants depend on. You then pay for bagged mulch to replace what was just removed.

Ask what the irrigation controller is set to
Cause for concern
Every station running for the same number of minutes. Drip and overhead spray treated identically. No allowance for a bed in full afternoon sun against one in shade.
What good looks like
Each station timed for what it waters and where it sits. Turf watered more often for shorter periods; shrubs and trees watered less often but for longer, so water reaches the deeper roots.
Why it matters. A single runtime guarantees half the property is drowning and the other half is thirsty, and you pay for all of it. This is usually the single largest recoverable cost on a property, and it is a settings change rather than a capital project.

Watch what happens to the ornamental grasses in late winter
Cause for concern
Every grass on the property is sheared to a stub at the same time, or none of them are touched at all. Sedges and fescues that were full and green come back thin, patchy, or not at all.
What good looks like
The deciduous, warm-season grasses such as deergrass are cut back hard while they are dormant. The evergreen ones, the sedges, fescues and their relatives, are combed through or thinned by hand and never shorn to the ground.
Why it matters. The two groups look similar to a crew moving quickly, and they want opposite treatment. A dormant deergrass wants cutting back and returns better for it. Cut an evergreen sedge or fescue to the ground and it may simply not come back. It is one of the fastest ways to lose an expensive planting, and because it happens once a year in a single afternoon, nobody is watching when it does.

Ask whether the native and Mediterranean beds are still being watered in July
Cause for concern
The drought-tolerant planting runs on the same summer schedule as the lawn and the tropicals. Plants that looked established and happy for two seasons start dying back, and get replaced with the same species, which then die on the same cycle.
What good looks like
Established Mediterranean and California native beds sit on their own valve, and summer water is cut hard or shut off entirely once the plants are through their first year or two.
Why it matters. Plants from Mediterranean climates are summer-dormant. Once established, water sitting on warm soil rots their roots and kills them. They are not drought-tolerant plants that also enjoy a drink, they are plants that need the dry season. A crew watering uniformly will kill a native bed without ever knowing why, and will keep replacing it. This is the most expensive habit on the list, because it destroys the planting the whole design was built around.

Ask for the last three months of fertilization and treatment records
Cause for concern
Nobody can produce them, or the schedule exists on paper and the applications keep sliding.
What good looks like
A monthly report from the crew leader showing what was applied and when, matched against the agreed schedule.
Why it matters. Many of these applications are seasonally timed. Missed in the window, they are not simply late, they are lost for the year, and the decline shows up two seasons later when nobody remembers the gap.
One in the wrong column is worth a conversation with your crew. Three or four is not a crew problem so much as a standards problem, and it will not fix itself with a sterner email. That is usually the point at which someone independent needs to walk the property, set the standard in writing, and check it.
Neat is not the same as healthy. A landscape can look tidy from the street and be losing plants on a five-year clock.
